Fuji 800z
Daylight film indoors. Do I need a correcting filter if I have filters in my enlarger?
Right now I’m using Fuji Pro 800z, daylight balanced film, but I want to buy a couple of color correcting filters to compensate for artificial lighting indoors.
However, I’m taking a color photography course this semester, and because we’ll be developing our own prints, I was wondering if I could compensate for any color cast with the filters that are placed in the enlarger?
I would. Otherwise, you’ll just be adding more variables to an already complicated process. From what I’ve heard, color optical printing is a lot harder than B&W. It would be a heck of a lot easier to just use a filter when you take the picture than to try to correct the color temperature afterward. Although granted, with a filter you are going to lose a little bit of light.
I have used daylight balanced film indoors. I was filming with an 8mm movie camera and Ektachrome 100D. I was trying to shoot in my house with incandescent lighting. I figured there would be a color shift, but I was just doing it for a hobby and it wasn’t anything important. Everything looked orange.
Conversely, if you use tungsten balanced film outside, you’ll get a bluish tint to everything.
