Spider Man 2- In the train scene when spider man tries to stop the train why cant that happen in real life?
I am doing a project on bad movie physics and i chose Spider Man 2 when he tries to use his web powers and his body to stop the train from going into the water. Is there a theory that shows this can not happen in real life? Why are the physics wrong?
If we assume the mass of the train M = 2,000 metric tons (an average train) = 2,000,000 kg, the initial velocity of the train when Spidey began to brake it = 30 mps (67 mph), and the time to stop the train dt = 200 seconds (the movie sequence was about 3 min long), the force F = M dV/dt = Ma = 2E6*30/200 = 300,000 Newtons ~ 34 tons (US) = 68,000 lbs; where dV/dt = a the deceleration of the train due to braking by Spidey. This is Newton’s second law of motion…F = Ma, the theory you’re looking for.
That force comes from two places in the movie: 2 spider strands attached one each to the buildings on other side of the train or Spidey’s feet on the rail ties in front of the train. From F = M dV/dt, we find for the stands there would be a force of about 17 tons (half the 34 tons force on each of two strands) pulling outward on each building where a web strand was attached…that’s 34,000 pounds of force pulling outward on each wall. You tell me, can a building wall take that kind of pull?
OK, then, how about braking with Spidey’s feet on the rail ties? Not likely here either…there would be the entire 34 tons of force on each tie. They would snap like dry twigs. Each tie would allow some small force before snapping, but the total average force of 34 tons to actually stop the train in 200 seconds would never be reached. Remember the 34 tons (and 17 tons for the webs) are average forces over that 200 seconds of deceleration. It is very unlikely Spidey could even get those forces as maximum forces, let alone average, because the building walls would buckle and the ties would break long before those forces.
So there you are…it would not happen in real life because the braking forces are way too high for the building walls and ties to handle…assuming Spidey himself is indestructable…that 17 tons tension on each spider web strand is also pulling on each of Spidey’s arms.
BTW, the rate of deceleration a = dV/dt = 30/200 = .15 m/sec^2 would be tolerable by the passengers on board; that’s way less than 1 g deceleration.

Spider-Man 2 – Music From And Inspired By $3.70 For such a sleek, high-flying superhero Spiderman seems to have surprisingly earthy tastes in rock & roll. No Jurassic 5. No Franz Ferdinand. Not even the White Stripes, whose color motif would have made perfect sense find space on his CD shelf. Instead, the latest installment of the comic book saga leans heavily toward explosive tunes by strapping tattooed men who aren’t afraid to cry: Dashboard … |

Spider-Man: Music From And Inspired By $0.92 The boys will be so pleased. Radio-friendly stadium rock is back in a big way, and Music from and Inspired by Spider-Man makes capital use of the trend. Like the blockbuster film itself, there’s an attempt to provide something enjoyably disposable for everyone–resulting in “anthemic” songs you nod along to, and then forget the second they’re done. Bands and artists you probably don’t know (Bleu, … |

Spider-Man 3: Music From & Inspired By $1.75 You know you’re dealing with a real blockbuster when the soundtrack is made up not only of rocking tracks, but of rocking tracks that were recorded specifically for the movie instead of being fished out of various preexisting albums. (Okay, except for Chubby Checker’s “The Twist”–that one’s not hot off the presses.) Such is the power of Spidey that he inspired the likes of Snow Patrol, the Killer… |

Spider-Man 2 [VHS] $3.59 More than a few critics hailed Spider-Man 2 as “the best superhero movie ever,” and there’s no compelling reason to argue–thanks to a bigger budget, better special effects, and a dynamic, character-driven plot, it’s a notch above Spider-Man in terms of emotional depth and rich comic-book sensibility. Ordinary People Oscar®-winner Alvin Sargent received screenplay credit, and celebrated author an… |

Spider-Man (2002) [VHS] $0.94 For devoted fans and nonfans alike, Spider-Man offers nothing less–and nothing more–than what you’d expect from a superhero blockbuster.
